Man Roland 700 Printing Press
World Premiere of New ROLAND 700 Generation
The Offenbach Technology Forum “ROLAND 700 Next Gen-eration” presents the ROLAND 700 HiPrint and DirectDrive
drupa atmosphere already at Offenbach: with a mix of technical pres-entations and elaborately staged press demonstrations, MAN Roland presents the new ROLAND 700 models. HiPrint and DirectDrive are the stars, enthusiastically received by the professional audience from 20 countries.
Close to 600 printing experts from Europe, overseas and the Far East vis-ited the week-long Technology Forum at the end of March, eager to ex-perience live medium-format sheet offset printing of the future. Dr. Markus Rall, MAN Roland Board Member and responsible for the sheetfed seg-ment, had extremely positive messages for the audience to get into the mood for the Technology Forum. Business with printing presses is good worldwide. MAN Roland completed its first year of independence with ex-cellent figures. 118 million euros mean the best operative result in the company’s history. With this momentum, which has also noticeably revital-ized the sheetfed offset business since 2005, MAN Roland is again setting new standards in the medium format. The ROLAND 700, by its continual advances in development, has been a trendsetter ever since its launch in 1990. Now the MAN ROLAND 700 HiPrint and MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive models are taking over, the latter being the first available series-produced press worldwide with direct drive of the plate cylinders. With these new develop-ments in accordance with the value- added printing philosophy, Markus Rall underlined, MAN Roland is particularly living up to the global trend to-ward production efficiency and increased product value. Both model lines aim at high productivity, integration of additional processes, quality safe-guarding, and value-added performances.
MAN ROLAND 700 HiPrint, the All-rounder and MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive, the Makeready Champion with 60 percent makeready time reduction
Prior to the press presentations, technology and efficiency aspects of the “Next Generation” were discussed. The new MAN ROLAND 700 HiPrint, the all-rounder, stands for continuity concerning the high quality standards in con-junction with comprehensive applications with integrated coating and en-hancing options. Comparative calculations of makeready times for eight-color sheetfed offset presses as commonly used today versus those of an optimally equipped MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive show that job changeover times can on average be reduced by as much as 60 percent to less than 20 minutes. This makes the MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive world champion in makeready time – a champion, even as long perfector, with main applica-tions in runs of less than 5,000 sheets or with use in rapid-fire printing of more than ten jobs per shift.
Direct drive: plate-change time eliminated
The all-important innovation of the DirectDrive version is the direct drive of the plate cylinder. In combination with an intelligent coupling system, it en-ables simultaneous changing of all printing plates and simultaneous makeready operations. During a job changeover, plate changes in all print-ing units and blanket wash-ups are concurrent, the inking-roller wash-up is concurrent with blanket- and impression-cylinder wash-ups, and done at different optimum speeds for the respective functions. Therefore, plate-change times no longer figure in calculations, processes running in the background. But DirectDrive offers advantages during the production run as well: individual inking units can be deactivated and image start can be corrected by up to 99 mm. Prior to the series release, DirectDrive was thoroughly tested. As early as 1996, MAN Roland had applied for first pat-ents on direct drive in a sheetfed press because it had extensive experi-ence with direct drive from web offset printing. In 2004, the first MAN ROLAND 700 printed as an experimental press with direct drive. Presentation at drupa 2004 was followed by several field test installations and putting-into-operation of the first MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive in the Offenbach factory. With the start of series production at the beginning of 2007, the technology is perfected and reliable.
Technology Forum at drupa level
Artistically staged, the new DirectDrive technology broke the shackles of secrecy. Then the “Next Generation” presses could be watched printing high-quality jobs with many changeovers in between. On show were the MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive as ten-color version with reversal and the RO-LAND 700 DirectDrive with six printing units plus double coating. The RO-LAND 700 HiPrint shone as a six-color version with Prindor InlineFoiler and cold-foil enhancing. Many guests were enthusiastic because they had never before seen this kind of inline enhancing or held such specimens in their hands. “drupa level” was a frequent comment on the quality of the Technology Forum.
MAN ROLAND 700 HiPrint: outstanding new features
- Increased sheet format of 740 x 1 050 or 780 x 1 050 mm; with it, the press offers the largest print format in this class
- Speed increase to 17,000 SPH in straight printing (optional) and 13,000 SPH in perfecting
- New Transferter design for even better leading-edge color register and even more precise setting of the gripper pad bars
- Deactivatable printing units in long designs.
The standard configurations of the MAN ROLAND 700 HiPrint comprise the two-, four- and five-color presses as well as short perfectors for 1/1, 2/2, 1/4 and www.man-roland.com 2/3 printing. The long configurations include the versions for 8-, 10- or 12-color printing with the reversing versions 4/4, 5/5 or 6/6. These configura-tions can be further equipped with coating module, swing-in coating system InlineCoater smart or reel-to-sheet feeder. The inline configurations encom-pass different versions of coating devices, UV device, cold-foil enhancing, and inline quality control systems. In addition, there is a large number of QuickChange devices for cutting makeready time to increase productivity. With these configurations, the MAN ROLAND 700 HiPrint is the all-rounder for use in all market segments, for all final formats, substrates and quality de-mands.
MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive: direct drive plus new feeder and delivery
In addition to the worldwide first electronic direct drive of the plate cylin-ders, the MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive offers various new developments in feeder and delivery. Important, makeready time reducing new features of the feeder are:
- increased base height by 50 percent to maximally 834 mm and in-creased pile load capacity by 70 percent to maximally 2.2 tonnes
- new pile-lifting technology for doubled speed in raising and lowering as well as for extremely fine pile phasing
- new suction head with complete guard and the new suction-head sus-pension with improvements in, for example, blast and separating ele-ments
- new pile-edge scanning and new sheet infeed control with automatic correction of early, late and misaligned sheets
- new control console on operator side, turnable into various positions.
The new delivery of the MAN ROLAND 700 DirectDrive is an advanced devel-opment of the AirGlide delivery. It offers, among other advantages,
- a new suction device for powder and odor, and powder removal with suction at the delivery gripper systems
- a new dryer concept for modular lamp casings, observation of sheet travel, and preinstalled waste-air tubing.
In addition, a new concept has been developed for UV drying between printing units. The new quick-action slide-in modules can be used as both interdeck and end dryers.

I do my best to get rid of my rubbish conscientiously but it’s sometimes demotivating whenever I find out what many other countries are doing to our planet!
